Sharyn Henry is well known and respected in the horse community in Southern California. Her riding and passion for horses started with her 9th birthday present, “Missy.”
Throughout her growing years Sharyn was fortunate to own, ride and compete on several amazing horses. She competed at local venues, breed shows, 4-H both in LA County and at the state level, and open shows. Her competing began with specializing in western, trail and showmanship.
Later she rode English, dressage, stadium jumping and cross-country jumping. She earned her B rating with the British Society of Pony Club and was very active in 4H.
At the age of 13 Sharyn was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. While in the hospital her dad surprised her with a visit from her horse! It was while hugging her horse in the parking lot that she realized the power and comfort her horses provided for her. They gave her stability and unconditional love during a horrible time, a time of being “different” and in pain physically and emotionally. She knows firsthand the need for acceptance, love and a place to belong in a tumultuous world.
As an adult she has spent over 20 years in the corporate environment specializing in writing, directing and producing corporate video, has worked in the interior design world as well as solar manufacturing.
She has also spent countless hours volunteering for Equestrian Trails Incorporated both nationally and locally, she’s educated many kids as a 4-H and Grange horse leader in both Orange and Ventura counties, and her horses have visited local schools to raise awareness of these beautiful spirits.
In early 2000 her focus changed. In a trip with her dad she discovered working with horses in the Eastern Sierras. That started a passion for this part of California and a job as general manager for a pack outfit in Mammoth Lakes. Here she managed employees as well as more than 100 horses and mules. This was the gift that sparked her need to blend her passion of horses with her livelihood.
Thus began Red Hat Cowgirl. Sharyn has worked with students for over 20 years to develop safe and talented riders, now it was time to reach out and broaden her impact.
Through her riding programs she is helping parents raise a new type of youth. Kids that are learning that life is much bigger than themselves. Around the horses they are required to be aware and follow certain rules to stay safe. They are introduced to a new type of communication. Reading a horse’s body language, the uniqueness of each horse and adapting. The variance of how the student has to “speak” to the horse on the horse’s terms—these are skills for life! These communication skills are easily related to communicate with their peers, parents and others in the world.
Her specialty is teaching life skills to her students. Confidence and self esteem grow as does the ability to communicate verbally and with body language. Students learn respect for themselves and others, kindness, sharing, awareness and leadership. They become responsible, organized and hard working. Their character develops and grows revealing a self-assured and compassionate person. It’s a treat to witness the growth and changes, pure bliss!
This is her life’s purpose and it shows in the students she is blessed to work alongside.
